The Otherlings Tarot

The Otherlings Tarot is an in-progress project, that upon completion, will be a hand-drawn, black and white, 78-card tarot deck. The story behind these weird and wonderful characters is one of transcending what it means to be "normal" or "acceptable" as prescribed by the limiting and oppressive standards of today’s society.

Each creature and being you will meet along the way is in some way distinct in their differences.

They exist outside, and beyond convention.

Their story is one rooted in another realm: A long time ago, a group of Otherlings were outcast from the community and families they were born into. They were left to live on the outskirts, due to those in power’s inability and refusal to see them for what, and who, they truly were.

The Otherlings found solace in their new surroundings. They made homes out of clouded skies, deep and cold waters, and dark, rich soil. The elements responded in kind to them in ways that the townsfolk never had.

They each learned from a great teacher who went by many names:

Desert and Rainstorm; Cave and Snake; Tree and Sea...

Much time had passed when those who had shunned them began to realize with great regret that even greater wisdom came hand in hand with the Otherlings' strange nature.

Their magic was stronger for overcoming other's perceptions of them, and they held special power that grew stronger from harnessing the entirety of their complex states-of-being.

Their myth lives on, and through story passed from generation to generation, they are now exalted and revered as Wise Ones; not despite their unacceptable nature, but because of it.

This deck hopes to spread the wisdom of the Otherlings, so like them, we can release ourselves from the restrictive rules and regulations that seek to mold us into who we are "supposed to be".

Together, we'll dive into the self-acceptance that comes along with embracing our personal intricacies, seeing our challenges as gifts, exploring the beauty that resides in hidden or forgotten parts of ourselves, and celebrating the things that we fear may set us apart.

My intention for this deck is to offer it as a tool to explore these fears, and to look after our fascinating inner and outer worlds with more love, devotion, awareness and care.

I wish to celebrate the Otherling that exists inside each one of us.

Two of Water

With the two of Cups, we enter into a new agreement.

You could also call it a deal, a contract, a relationship.

It is aligning your frequency and physical state to what attracts you- to what you truly desire.

Drawing this image made me think about the Christian practice of Holy Communion. What does that word really mean, beyond the specific religious context?

"The sharing of intimate thoughts and feelings, especially when the exchange is on a mental or spiritual level". It is a sacred exchange.

It circulates around the idea of: I trust that if I open part of myself to this- or you, I will receive something I value in return. I believe you are good; that this is good.

I will allow you to drink from my cup. I trust you enough to drink from my cup without draining it. I will drink from your cup. I trust you enough to drink from your cup and believe it will nourish, not harm me.

To experience this sort of trust is healing, whether it takes form of a partnership, a friendship, or a romance. Its a difficult thing to do. Its a risk to come as you are, and to realize the value of what you have to offer. Its a matter of trusting yourself, as well.

Everyday, we fear rejection. So to find another personal you can look at face to face, heart to heart, palm to palm, and risk that- is a revolutionary act.

Some choose to put their walls up, or run the other direction because both being seen and confronting change can be terrifying....and the one sure thing about this is that you won't remain the same.

This is an eyes open, lights on love.

A recognition of souls.

A symbiotic, synergistic support.

This is harnessing Love, as universal energy- and allowing yourself to feel the harmony through relating with another special vessel.

There are lessons here. The past may have had problems, the future may hold more. Pain may exist on either side of time- but in the present moment- this is one of the most valuable experiences available to humanity.

So say yes. To a commitment. One of giving, of receiving, and of true vulnerability- for it will transform you both.

Two of Air

Two very opposite things can be true at once.

Let this realization sink in.

There are different perspectives, experiences, and stories.

And each are all valid in their own way.

There are different realities, equal in merit and in possibility.

There are two roads; they may both be right, they may both be wrong. The strangest thing about it all, though?

All of these two's- they are really one.

Two edges of one sword//Two sides of a coin.

Once integrated, the two become one. They become a whole.

It is through realizing this, that we can move out of this position of meditation or stuckness (depending on our perception of what side of the coin we are on.) and move forward in our journey.

We must reconcile opposing forces, and use their friction to then emerge as one entity and carry on as the time becomes right.

Two of Earth

In the beginning of any journey, as we begin to step up, out, and into our heart's calling- we realize that the things we have imagined and dreamed of do exist. They are attainable....but they take work.

Our old habits won't work the same as we set out on our new path. We learn that we need to get acquainted with the worth of sacrifice. We must be willing to get ourselves a little (or a lot) uncomfortable.

We must stretch ourselves and our resources to test our own boundaries and understand- then exceed our self-imposed limits.

We must realize our possibilities are infinite, but there is a smart, more efficient way to bend them to our will...if we can only figure it out.

We must wrangle all of that which holds us back and transmute it, to become what we hope we can be. To do what we hope to do.

We must clear the old and make space for the new and necessary.

This will take juggling, reprioritizing, and great awareness and dedication.

It may be a risk and there is no guarantee, but can we turn the chaos into fun?

Can we make our response to pressure, a form of play?

Two of Fire

So it begins. You’ve harnessed the energy of the Ace of Fire; the quick sudden blast of heat like lightning to a tree. You hold it in your hands and feel it’s charge, and it starts to become real.

It’s as if it is staring back at you, challenging you to make a move. And you are staring right back at it, ready for what is to come.

Your vision is forming.

Where will it take you? Why is this important to you? Who’s help will you need to employ? What is the time frame?

A new world awaits you behind the orb’s eye, see into it and ponder your place in it. You must decide now what to take with you, and what to leave behind too.

What are you risking? Do you understand why it is worth it for you to take this risk? What do you have to discover for yourself, that you wouldn’t be able to if you stayed still?

Potential energy vibrates through your entire existence right now, awaiting a channel to move into.

Trust yourself.

Tell it where to go....then follow.
